Hole 5 - The Black Fox
In 1933 the golf writer and course architect Tom Simpson chose this hole to be the thirteenth hole in his "ideal golf course" chosen from all the courses in the Home Counties. Simpson said it was “in its own way as difficult as the 17th at St Andrews”. It was a par 4 and then, as now, needed accuracy and careful planning. Today it is a short par 5 (long par 4 for the ladies!) with a generously wide fairway but three punishing bunkers and heather await on the right. It is, however, desirable to approach the green from that side since there is a long run-in from the left of a smallish green which requires the correct club. A good chance for a birdie.
